Canadian Citizenship
Canadian citizens hold Canadian passports and have the right to vote provincially/territorially, and federally.
For many, becoming a Canadian citizen is the joyous culmination of many years spent in Canada, and much work and determination.
Grant of Canadian Citizenship
Applying for a Grant of Canadian Citizenship, also called Naturalization, is often considered “the end” of many foreign nationals’ immigration journeys in Canada, and marks a momentous and proud moment in their lives.
Following a successful application, you will be invited to take the oath of citizenship at a citizenship ceremony, a formal ceremony that marks the end of your status as a permanent resident, and the start of your life as a Canadian citizen.
To become a naturalized Canadian citizen, most applicants must:
have permanent resident (PR) status in Canada,
have lived in Canada for at least 3 out of the last 5 years (1,095 days),
have filed their taxes, if required,
pass a citizenship test (if you are between age 18-54),
prove their language skills in English or French (if you are between age 18-54), and
take the oath of citizenship (if you are at least 14 years old).
Proof of Canadian Citizenship
Under very specific and limited circumstances, you can become a Canadian citizen without applying to be one. In these cases, you may want to apply to get proof of your citizenship, by way of a Canadian citizenship certificate.
The Canadian Citizenship Act has been amended several times, and the citizenship rules and requirements changed in 2009, 2015, 2017, and 2020. Determining if you may be a Canadian citizen or not is a complex topic, and one that we would be happy to undertake with you.
In general, you may already be a Canadian citizen if you:
became a citizen because of changes to the Citizenship Act, or
were born outside Canada and at least one of your parents (legal parent at birth or biological parent) either:
was born in Canada, or
became a naturalized citizen before you were born.
It’s important to note that you do not automatically become a Canadian citizen if you marry, or are adopted by, a Canadian citizen, or if you have lived in Canada for a long time as a permanent resident.
